In 1897, Good Shepherd Mission was deeded 48 acres of land in the Fort Defiance, AZ area of the Navajo Reservation. Over the years, thirty acres of that land has gone undeveloped, being variously used for pasture and/or crops. In recent years, it has gone totally unused.
The Good Shepherd Mission Parish Council acknowledged that having such privately owned land - which is not subject to the vagaries and restrictions of Tribal Trust Land - could be a great economic benefit, not only for the Mission, but to the whole community. Leasing the land for economic development purposes could provide significant income for the Mission as well as jobs and services for the community.
The Good Shepherd Mission Development Corporation has been formed to evaluate existing and future opportunities.
