Visiting the Southeast Region

Facilities

Good Shepherd Mission is pleased to be able to provide housing for visitors to the Navajo Nation through the Hozho' Retreat House. Limited camping is also available in the summer months.

The Hozho' Retreat House (HRH) has four bedrooms with 7 bunkbeds and one full-sized bed, two bathrooms with showers, two lounge areas and 4 couch-beds, sleeping up to 22 people. The kitchen includes major appliances as well as dishes, utensils, pots, pans and some spices and baking staples. Bed linens, blankets, pillows and bathroom towels are provided.

Currently, we do not have formal dining tables inside for large groups. Outside on the porch, there are two picnic tables for dining in good weather.

No cleaning service is provided during your stay. A washing machine, dryer and cleaning supplies are available for your use in the Retreat House.

Scheduling Your Reservation

Partner groups assisting with Southeast Region ministry projects have scheduling preference. Reservations for the Hozho' Retreat House for upcoming summer guests may not be confirmed until after the first of the year. Week-long guests having preference over weekend visitors.

Small groups may be asked to share space in the Retreat House with others and all groups are asked to leave the HRH relatively clean prior to departure so that we can quickly get things ready for the next group to arrive.  Individual reservations are possible when no groups are scheduled.

Know that the months of March, June and July are our busiest times.

Good Shepherd Mission

Ministry Partners

Good Shepherd Mission invites guests coming to the Mission to become partners in our ministry in Navajoland. In this relationship, we seek to honor Navajo traditions through balance (that the time in Navajoland not be solely project-based) and through exchanges of culture and knowledge. We encourage visitors to bring photos, stories and other representations of your community so that we may also get to know you better.

To become a Ministry Partner, we invite you/your group to pledge that:

  •
    25% of your time (or more) with us will be spent learning about Navajo culture, traditions and spirituality, meeting and developing relationships with our congregation as time permits;
  • 25% of your time (but not much more) will be spent with our leadership and congregation working on ministry programs of the Mission, e.g. coordinating and implementing service projects at the Mission, St. Mark's-Coalmine or in the community; and
  • our relationship includes a commitment to explore ways that members of our congregations, especially our youth, might visit your community to develop a long-term, two-way partnership, not just a one-way street.

As Ministry Partners, you will receive in return:

  • lodging in the Hozho’ Retreat House for $18.00 per person per night;
  • scheduling assistance for cultural programs;
  • remembrance in our community prayers;
